So I just installed my new graphics card, an XFX Geforce 9800gt. It has 512mb DDR3 Memory which runs at 1600Mhz, a 600Mhz GPU, 112 Processing Cores and has Nvidia PhysX Technology along with CUDA Technology. So what does this mean? Well a GPU can process graphics data a lot more efficiently than a CPU. Instead of processing one bit of information at a time, like a tradition CPU, the GPU just blasts it all out at once.
Here is a live demonstration from the guys at Myhbusters that do a practical demonstration that shows how a GPU works.
GPUs are making a big storm all over at the moment and not just in the gaming world. Seimens are using the new technology to make a new 3D ultra sound machine that will cost far less than traditional 2D ones. GPUs are also helping scientists all over to help process data far quicker than ever before.
With the new technology there will be a lot of improvements and new innovations that were never possible before. So how long will it be before the CPU becomes redundant and replaced altogether by the GPU?
